Kitchen Cupboards Without a Renovation: How to Choose Freestanding Cupboards and Storage Cabinets

When South Africans search for kitchen cupboards, most results are about fitted kitchens: measuring up, quotes, installers and weeks of waiting. That is the right route if you are renovating. But if you rent, live in a flat, have a kitchen with no pantry, or simply need more space this month, a freestanding cupboard or storage cabinet does much of the same job. It needs no installer, you can move it when you move house, and it can go wherever the gap is: next to the fridge, in a scullery, a passage or a laundry corner.

This guide explains how to choose one that fits your space, carries the weight you plan to put on it and stays steady once it is loaded.

Fitted or freestanding: which do you need?

Fitted cupboards are built into the room and fixed to the wall and floor. Freestanding cupboards are complete units that stand on their own feet. Choose freestanding if you:

Most of the cupboards on our storage cabinets and cupboards page are not only for the kitchen. Many are described for bathrooms, bedrooms, hallways and utility spaces as well, so one cabinet can do the job of a pantry today and a linen cupboard later.

Measure before you choose

A cupboard that is 3 cm too wide is useless, so measure three times and write it down:

Listed sizes give you a feel for the range. Our industrial 3-door sideboard is 100 × 35 × 75 cm, the 3-tier rustic kitchen trolley is 40 × 60 × 89 cm, and the slim white 6-drawer cabinet is 150 × 45 cm. Always check the exact measurements on the product page before you order.

Match the cupboard to what you will store

Groceries and dry goods

For tins, packets and jars, shelves you can adjust matter more than anything else, because cereal boxes and spice jars are very different heights. Cabinets such as the white cabinet with drawer, double doors and adjustable shelves let you set the spacing to suit your stock. Inside an existing cupboard, a set of 2 stackable cabinet organiser shelves (each shelf rated up to 15 kg) gives you a second level, so nothing gets lost at the back.

Crockery, glasses and serving ware

A sideboard-height cabinet gives you storage below and a surface on top. The oak sideboard kitchen storage cabinet has three doors, an adjustable shelf in each side cabinet and transparent doors, so you can see what is inside. More options are on our sideboards and consoles page.

Microwave, kettle and coffee machine

If your counter is full of appliances, an open rack frees it up. The kitchen baker's rack with power outlet has a built-in power strip with 4 outlets, an on/off switch and overload and leakage protection, rated up to 1,875 W. Add up the wattage of the appliances you plan to run together and stay under that figure. See all our kitchen storage and trolleys.

Materials: MDF, chipboard and steel

In a damp scullery or laundry, choose a design that lets air move, such as open wire shelving or louvre doors, and leave a small gap between the cupboard and the wall.

Weight limits and stability

Food is heavy. A shelf of tins or a stack of plates can reach a shelf's limit quickly, so read the load rating on the product page. For example, the industrial 3-door sideboard is rated up to 30 kg on the top and up to 10 kg per shelf. Put the heaviest items on the lowest shelf.

Tall, narrow cupboards should be secured, especially in homes with children or pets. Many of our cabinets include an anti-tip kit or a wall-fixing option. If your floor is uneven, which is common with older tiles, choose a unit with adjustable feet so the doors stay aligned.

Assembly tips

Freestanding cupboards are usually assembled at home. Before you start, lay out and count the parts against the instructions; some units, such as the oak sideboard, come with labelled components and the hardware you need. Build the cupboard near where it will stand, ask a second person to help lift tall units upright, level it with the adjustable feet, and only then fit the anti-tip strap.

Questions

Can I use a freestanding cupboard as a kitchen pantry?

Yes. A cabinet with doors and adjustable shelves works well as a grocery cupboard. Set the shelf heights to suit your tins, packets and jars, and keep the heaviest items on the lowest shelf.

What should I measure before buying a kitchen cupboard?

Measure the width at floor level and at counter height (skirting boards and plug points can narrow the gap), the depth including space for the doors to open, the height under any window sill or wall cupboard, and the doorways the box must pass through.

Is MDF or chipboard OK in a kitchen?

Both are widely used for freestanding cupboards. MDF has a smooth, wipeable surface, and chipboard is strong for its weight. Neither likes standing water, so wipe up spills quickly and keep the cupboard away from leaks.

How do I stop a tall cupboard from tipping over?

Use the anti-tip kit or wall-fixing option if the cupboard comes with one, level the unit with its adjustable feet, and load heavy items at the bottom. This matters most in homes with children or pets.

How long does delivery take?

We deliver in 1–3 working days in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town, and in 3–6 working days elsewhere. Free delivery on orders of R750 (incl. VAT) or more in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town.

Can I return a cupboard if it does not fit?

Yes, LASA offers 30-day returns. The return policy page explains the steps and any return fee.
